Making Sure your Mobile Broadband Deal is Compatible With Your Mac

We’ve heard many questions about whether mobile broadband is compatible with an Apple Mac and which deal to go for for Mac users so we decided to put together this simple guide to address these questions.

Hardware and Software
Macbook and mobile broadbandIn general a mobile broadband dongle is a simple bit of hardware which connects via a USB port and acts as a modem using a SIM card to access data over the mobile phone 3G networks. There is no reason at all why, from a pure hardware perspective, the dongle should be incompatible with Macs. Where there have been issues in the past is with the software that the dongle needs to run and preinstalls when connected which were often originally PC only. In 2008 and 2009 there were a lot of complaints from users not being able to use the software with their Macs but these have now been resolved in all new mobile broadband deals (although if you do accidentally buy an older dongle from a store or third party retailer there’s a risk it may preinstall older software). We recently tested a new dongle from each of the fine main networks with a recent Macbook Pro and all worked absolutely fine without any problems.

Which Mac OS Are You Using?
One thing you do need to consider, however, is which version of the Mac OS you are using. As long as you’re running a recent version of the operating system you should have no problems. The list below shows which Mac operating systems the current mobile broadband dongles from each network are compatible with:

- T-Mobile Broadband – Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) and above
- Orange Mobile Broadband – Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) and above
- Three Mobile Broadband – Mac OSX 10.4 (Tiger) and above
- Vodafone Mobile Broadband – Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard ) and above
- O2 Mobile Broadband – Mac OSX 10.5 (Leopard) and above

As long as you are running at least the operating system above with your chosen network you should be absolutely fine running mobile broadband on a Mac but just in case anything does go wrong, as long as you buy online you are entitled by law to a 14 day refund for any reason so there’s no need to worry about taking out a contract in case it doesn’t work with your Mac.

Which Are The Best Deals?
T-Mobile BroadbandThe final thing to consider is which are the best mobile broadband deals for Macs. Generally you can choose from any of the deals on this site and as long as the network’s dongle is compatible with the OS you are running you will be fine. You can even choose a free laptop deal if you’d like to have a second laptop or netbook and use the dongle with both the Mac and PC. Generally we recommend T-Mobile’s Unlimited Mobile Broadband deal for £10 a month (see Unlimited Mobile Broadband Guide) because there’s no risk of bill shock but you can see all deals here.
